Rhystan Pralexis, born and raised in an isolated island convent, has been in a coma since he was nine; fifteen years later, he comes to the mainland of Aegliana to learn about the world around him. Everything has changed -- there has been a leadership overhaul, the minority populations of angels and mages have been persecuted, and a fierce, violent rebellion is underway.
In this confusion, Rhys suddenly finds himself -- to his considerable surprise -- leaving his work in a library of records in order to join the military. He is recruited by the elite special force called the King's Navy and pulled aboard the airship Aurelia, home of the sector charged with protecting the Prince in the war, as their recorder, keeper of the sacred ship's logs.
But Rhys soon discovers that the job holds more complications than he could have imagined. The crew of the Aurelia -- headed by the long-suffering Commodore Harry Moore, the quiet and withdrawn Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Connor, the mercurial Admiral of Trafalgar, and the bright, energetic Deputy Lieutenant Jackson -- appear to be entirely loyal, but they secretly head yet another underground rebel movement. Sickened by the dictatorial Prince Hadrian and abhorring the brutality of the rebellion, the Aurelia and its fellow rebels are working to place a fair ruler on the throne and stop the discrimination and corruption running rampant. They are both in an ideal but desperately dangerous position -- they get intelligence directly from Prince Hadrian, but were they to be discovered by the Prince or the other side of the rebels, the punishment would be brutal not just for them, but for the entire rebel network.
As Rhys learns more about the politics of the world he's suddenly in the middle of, he grows more and more convinced that the Aurelia's crew are doing the right thing. However, even as he dedicates himself to the rebel movement, the battles rage on even more fiercely and he finds himself playing a more vital part than he ever could have imagined. An undisputed prophecy lists him as the only one who can carry on the records of the war -- in order to fulfill it, he must place himself in the middle of the action. However, his life is in more and more danger by the moment, and his survival is instrumental to not only the prophecy but to history as a whole...
